“One of the best rides I’ve been on and I’ve riding all over the United states Yellowstone Yosemite Texas and I have to say not only is Thompson ranch friendly but you can tell that the horses are well cared for and do minimal rides, not 3 or 4 times a day style. I could go on and on about how great they are, but take my word for it they are the best trail ride on Maui let alone where I’ve been so far. Jerry and Andrea took us out, fantastic above and beyond, way better than the usual tourist trail ride!!”

“Very awesome. My wife and I were the only ones on the tour, the owner Jerry was our tour guide. He was very professional and friendly, he is very humble and treats his horses (and dogs and all his animals) like family. The ride up the trail was breathtaking and fun, we stopped for a quick snack at his cabin and ended up talking for awhile getting to know him and how great a person he is before heading back down. We would definitely do this again.

Although my girls (ages 4 & 7), husband and I love horses the girls have yet to go horse back riding except for the quick horse/pony rides at our town fairs back home. It is so obvious that the Thompson family loves and puts their hearts into caring for their animals, their ranch, and what they do! This was more than just a horse ride yet an amazing experience (from the people, to the animals, to the ride, to the view). We felt safe, comfortable, well informed, and enjoyed every minute of it. We recommend this experience as a “must do” in order to capture the beauty, history, and authenticity of upper country Maui! It’s one of those experiences where you ask yourself “why go anywhere else?”. We’ll be back on our next visit. We reminisce about our new friends (the Thompson’s and their animals) all the time!”

“Great experience. Wonderful owners. Ride far exceeded our expectations. Horse are extremely well broke. We live close to the Mountains in Southern Alberta and ride there. The elevations are the same, but the scenery is ocean instead of mountains. You will love this, Jerry and his daughter love their animals and so will you. Not a highly commercialized operation but a genuine working ranch. Wonderful hospitality. They really make you feel welcome. Well worth the price. Bargain actually.”

“Husband and I chose this place as it seemed more home-y and a little more private than some of the bigger horseback riding ranches. We had the loveliest ride with Jerry, just us and one other guest – -up the mountain and all around his expansive property, as he pointed out deer, his livestock (cows, goats) and sights and landmarks, and told some neat stories about how the ranch operates. It’s totally a family-run place, and you feel so at home. Thank you Jerry for a fantastic experience – would 100% recommend to anyone!”
“We had the BEST ride with Jerry at Thompson ranch. This is his home, a working ranch. He has wonderful horses, cows and goats. It’s in the high country where it’s nice and cool. “Went riding after viewing a spectacular sunrise from the summit of Haleakala. Views from the ranch are unreal…gorgeous vistas of south Maui, Kahoolawe, and Lanai. This is a real working ranch, not there just for the sake of the visitors. You’ll see a variety of livestock in addition to the beautiful horses. The trails up the slopes of the volcano are not especially easy (the horses do almost all the work), but you do need to pay attention and reap the rewards of a once in a lifetime ride. Jerry, Toni, and Andi made us feel like guests, not customers, and shared a little slice of their lives and land with us. Be prepared for a view of Maui that is totally unexpected. I recommend!”
“It was my first time riding. Looking at the terrain upon arrival made me even more nervous. After meeting Toni and her daughter, Andi, our guides for the day, I was put at ease. After meeting my horse, Reba, an experience and gentle soul, I put my trust in her and she did not disappoint. She knew the path and often opt to find a more easy path as we climbed up the “hills/ mountains”. I fell completely in love with my horse. What an amazing 1st time experience! Thank you to the Thompson family for loving your horses (very noticeable) and opening them to the public!!!! Will definitely visit you all again on my next visit!!!!”

“We have a family of 4 which consisted of our 10 year old daughter and 13 year old son, the horses were so gentle and friendly with them, never had to worry about them during a steep climb up the mountain trails. Our family had an amazing time, we enjoyed the company of Ranch Owner Jerry Thompson, who escorted us up the trails, he provided insight of the area, the different animals that roam his land and just entertained us with stories. He was especially great with our kiddos, making sure they were OK al the way up and down the trails. All our horses had their own personalities and had their own preferences going up and down the trails, but they were always careful and followed each other almost in a single file line.
I would give this horse ranch a 10 out of 10, if you want beautiful scenery, a complex trail, great company and of course awesome horses, this is the place to go. They really take care of their horses as well, they only take them on rides once a day, so if you don’t make a reservation, it’s very possible you’ll be out of luck, so give them a call or go to their website to make a reservation, you won’t be disappointed.

“My husband and I spent our morning with Jerry & Toni Thompson who were fabulous hosts and guides. Their ranch is an actual working ranch that they run themselves, with warmth and humor. The ride is GREAT! The views were breathtaking as you make your way up to the top of the tour. We loved the fact that we got to ride by a big bull, and lots of goats & sheep. They pride themselves on the love and care of the land and animals. We would highly recommend the ranch for a great horsebacking adventure. We will definitely return during our next visit!!!”
“We had an absolutely lovely trail ride today, with owner Jerry Thompson as our guide. He was a delight, so clearly dedicated to the animals and the land his family has ranched for generations. The views were stunning and the weather was perfect. Jerry showed us where they have been trying to remove invasive plants and trees, and replace them with native species. We got to see some of his goats and cattle, of which he was clearly proud. The horses could not have been any sweeter: incredibly well-trained and the gentlest rides I think we’ve ever had on a tourist trail. They were total sweethearts. Jerry also gave us some great recommendations for other local activities and restaurants — he obviously knows his neighbours well and was happy to direct us to support other small businesses in Kula. We had a magical morning on Thompson Ranch, thank you Jerry and Toni! Very highly recommended.”
